("Gelmedium", a protective lacquer for acrylic colors, is used to protect and pronounce the decals.)

Decal fitter and adhesive are available from several companies and can be purchased at handicraft stores.
After applying the decals they should be painted with a layer of "Gelmedium" for protection. At Noix De Rome we recommend "Gelmedium" for its protective quality and highly transparent look. "Gelmedium" is also available in handicraft stores.

2. Undercoating.
Clean the surface carefully to remove dirt and grease.
Paint a layer of clear undercoat.

3. Cutting and trimming the decals.
Cut the decals carefuly as shown in the photograph.
Cut the decals carefully and trim the borders as close to the eye as possible.

4.Applying the decals.
Soak the trimmed decals in water until you can pick them from their base. Do not soak them until they start to float! If you submerge too long they will loose their adhesive layer.

Slide the decal from the holding base onto the undercoated surface and adjust the position in the eye socket carefully.
If necessary, e.g. you soaked the decals too long, apply additional adhesive.

Remove excessive water.

Although the decals have been applied with all necessary care, wrinkles may occur after drying.
Wrinkles can be removed by applying a thin layer of softener.

5. Completion.
After drying apply a final layer of "Gelmedium" for protection and natural appearance.

2. Draft
Choose a face of your taste, e.g. from magazines or photo collections. Before starting with the dolls face, it might be helpful to draft the face on a sheet of paper.

Outline the eyes, eyebrows etc. on the doll's face with a pencil.
You may also outline the facial features using diluted acrylic paint. Try several methods and use the method which suits your style best.

3. White undercoat
When painting the white of the eye feel free to try various techniques. Explore the effects of various shades of white or thickness of the paint.

You may mix white paint with a little blue. This gives a more natural impression of the eye.

4. Painting the pupils

5. Highlight the pupil with white paint

6. Shading
Shading the upper eyelid with a lighter color than the pupil gives a greater depth to the eye.

8. Painting the lips.
You increase the natural look of the mouth by painting a darker shadow between upper and lower lip.

Allow the paint to dry completely.
